Javier Romo
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & CO-FOUNDER | CHAIRMAN, BTB COMMITTEE
Born in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles, California, to Mexican immigrant parents, Javi grew up in Southeast Los Angeles and graduated from Bell High School in 1993. During his youth, he ran cross country, competed in track and wrestling, and developed an early passion for literature and creative writing.
Javi attended California State University, Long Beach, where he studied English Literature and developed a deep appreciation for the opportunities his country provided to him and his family. During this time, he also discovered a calling to serve and found resonance with the warrior ethos of the United States Marine Corps.
In 1998, Javi enlisted in the Marine Corps and served with Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines, 81mm Mortar Platoon. His unit deployed as a homeland-ready reaction force in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2002 and later to Iraq in 2003 for Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he served as an infantry forward observer. His dedication and service were recognized with multiple honors, including the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Certificate of Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation.
After Operation Iraqi Freedom, he continued to serve, training Forward Observers and Mortarmen for the next generation of Marine infantry, until he separated in 2007.
After returning home from Iraq, Javi faced the lasting challenges of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic pain, and traumatic brain injury. When conventional medicine offered little relief, he turned toward alternative healing practices—discovering the restorative power of movement, nature, and community. Through outdoor recreation, somatic practices, and mindfulness, he found renewed balance and purpose.
Today, Javi lives in Bend with his wife of 19 years and their two children, Alexander and Xiola. He enjoys camping, hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, jiu-jitsu, and other outdoor pursuits that help him connect with his community, strengthen his mental health, and cultivate mindfulness. His journey has inspired him to help fellow veterans rediscover purpose and healing through shared experiences in nature and creative expression.
